Peer networks and networks of practice are the informal, emergent social networks that facilitate information exchange between individuals with practice-related goals. And these networks are the unspoken lifelines that run through social movements.

Through connecting, enabling and helping people to support each other, these networks enable deep transformation, weaving through the complex environments that social movements seek to change.

This training session focuses on how to build and manage peer-led networks without adopting a command and control mentality. This top-down mindset prevents networks from thriving. We’ll show you the tools, techniques and behaviours you need to allow other people to lead and flourish. This is the key to growing and sustaining a thriving network.

During this session, we will walk you through The Network Building Canvas, which is designed to help you understand, test and experiment with your network. Who is in the network? How do people find it? How do you shift from command and control to a genuine peer-led network that powers itself and others?

In this introduction to networks for impact we will run through the following key areas of the canvas which cover the essentials of creating strong peer networks and networks of practice:

1. Typologies and structures
What are the different types of network? Are there different stages of network development?

2. Purpose, identity and values
Do people need a shared vision to form a successful network?

3. Power, leadership and decision-making
How can people work together to make networks effective?

4. Roles and functions of people
What roles are essential in networks to make networks effective?

5. Value creation and exchange
What value can networks create and how is it exchanged? What are the potential business models?

6. Infrastructure and resources
What resources and infrastructure are needed to best support networks?

Meet the trainers

Claire Doran is a Senior Social Change Consultant. Claire has 15+ years of peacebuilding experience and specialises in intercultural conflict transformation with a regional focus in the Asia/Pacific region. They have worked on migrant and diasporic organising, documenting the stories of international women peacemakers, interfaith dialogue, community mediation, and design justice. Claire holds an MA in Peace Studies and an undergraduate degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. They are restored through sea swimming, cooking, hiking and writing.

Rachel Krengel is an accomplished and seasoned campaigner with a commitment to social justice and equality. As part of various grassroots and community groups she has campaigned on issues including austerity, reproductive justice, renter’s rights and menstrual equity.

She holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of East Anglia and is a great believer in the power of language storytelling in campaigning and movement building, having used her own lived experience to inform campaigns as well as empowering and supporting others to to do the same.

How much does it cost?
Whether your coming from a grassroots movement, a local council, a charitable organisation or for-profit company, we want to ensure these introductory workshops are open to all. That’s why we use a pay-what-you-wish model. Simply enter the amount that you would like to pay when you book your ticket.

Can I bring my team along?
In order to ensure fairness and a diverse range of people, places are limited to up to two people per organisation. Please get in touch if you would like on-site training for larger groups of people.
