The business case for purpose and profit – Why we’re part of the BCorp community
B Corp is a non-profit that certifies companies who want to benefit society as well make money. Hailed as the business equivalent to Fair Trade certification, B Corp boast some big brands like Patagonia and Ben and Jerry’s on their roster.
We asked our CEO and Founder, Esther Foreman why she wanted to sign up.
What was your business case for joining B-Corp?
“As a for-profit agency that specialises in creating and developing social movements, it was important to put our money where our mouth is. I wanted to demonstrate that business can be a force for good, just like the charity sector.”
What was the biggest challenge in getting certified?
“The certification process is thorough and we had to make sure we were being true to the evaluation. One of the biggest challenges was convincing associates that it was the right thing to do. I had to persuade lawyers that this was a legitimate request that wouldn’t put the business at risk.”
What difference has it made to company culture?
“Now we have to consider our impact in everything that we do. It’s helped us to put social justice at the centre of our work with clients, suppliers, staff and shareholders. I think it’s brought a higher degree of trust amongst our clients and colleagues. And there’s more room for practical experimentation too. We have to find an ethical approach to our challenges.”
