About this workshop: This half-day participatory workshop will explore what it means to work in complexity and introduce approaches to enable more effective funding, commissioning and delivery in complex contexts.

Purpose of the workshop: The workshop will explore the ‘Human Learning Systems’ model, plus tools and examples from Collaborate and Newcastle Business School’s report: Exploring the New World: Practical insights and examples for funding, commissioning and delivering in complexity. It aims to equip you with the knowledge, confidence and inspiration to develop more effective approaches to working in complexity in your organisation and day-to-day work.

Who is it for? This workshop is for anyone who funds, commissions or delivers support. You may be frustrated by mindsets, processes and structures (e.g. siloed working, rigid KPIs) that prevent you from working effectively to help tackle complex issues.

You may be:

  • A funder
  • A commissioner
  • Someone who provides or manages services/support (e.g. working in a charity, public services)

Learning Outcomes

After the workshop you will:

  • Understand better what complexity is and the implications for your work
  • Understand a ‘Human Learning Systems’ approach and how this can enable more effective working in complex contexts
  • Have identified practical opportunities to apply a Human Learning Systems approach in your work
  • Have developed supportive relationships with peers and identified shared areas of interest you may want to explore together

Meet your host: Dawn Plimmer

Dawn is Head of Practice at Collaborate CIC where she leads Collaborate’s place-based systems change work in a number of areas, and its work on funding and commissioning. She is co-author of the report Exploring the New World: practical insights for funding, commissioning and managing in complexity. Dawn has over ten years experience in strategy, learning and funding roles in the public and voluntary sectors, including roles at the Big Lottery Fund and as Senior Consultant at NPC (New Philanthropy Capital). Dawn is trustee of a local grantmaking trust and Xenia, a community group in Hackney which brings together women learning English and women who speak fluent English to promote language learning, social connections and cultural exchange.

There are three different ticket options* and are first come first serve. Ticket prices include VAT.

*Why are there three different ticket prices? Being an inclusive network is one of the core Losing Control principles and what that means is we are committed to include people from different backgrounds, sectors, and experiences as well as to make sure that ticket costs do not exclude Losing Control network members from participating. With that being said, the ticket sales for this event are just enough to cover the cost of running the Teach Me session. There are three different options so that those who are paid well to do their work or can afford pay it forward or standard ticket will be supporting other people to come along on a discounted ticket and travel bursary

Accessibility: The venue has step free access, if you have any particular concerns about accessibility please get in touch with karen@thesocialchangeagency.org to discuss more
