We are looking for a full time community organiser to join a small team as part of a two year project to build capacity in community groups across Lambeth and Southwark. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and building relationships with a range of grassroots community groups in order to provide them with small grants and ad hoc organising support, as well as identifying community leaders who would benefit from more in depth leadership development. All of the grants given out as part of this project will be managed through our Accountable service.
- Build and develop deep relationships with two communities in Lambeth and Southwark to support the set up of a community network/group, so the community can make the change they want to see in their area.
- Identify and develop community leaders and volunteer organisers to lead these new groups into the future.
- Support community led and grassroots groups across Lambeth and Southwark with ad hoc organising support e.g facilitating conversations/workshops for their leadership groups, advising on increasing volunteer capacity and any other challenges that arise.
- Build relationships with a large number of community leaders to gather information about the challenges being faced by individuals in Lambeth and Southwark, and be able to distil this information to be fed back to our partners and funder.
- Through building relationships in the community, identify community leaders who could be invited to join an in depth leadership program.
- Onboard groups to our accountable fiscal hosting service.
- Work with the evaluator to monitor the progress of the project.
- Be an active part of the project team, together developing plans, overcoming challenges and keeping the project on track.
We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic person who believes that communities can create change through building strong relationships and supporting community leaders. You will be someone who wants to help grassroots groups access the support to strengthen their leadership, resources to build upon their work and become resilient and sustainable.
You’ll be organised, curious and enterprising, with well-honed people and communication skills. We will be looking for an individual who has a good mix of skills as follows:
- Understanding of how grassroots community groups organise and the challenges they face
- Experience of organising as part of community group
- An interest in fiscal hosting and financial management for grassroots groups
- Direct knowledge of communities in Lambeth and Southwark
- Strong interpersonal skills. Able to develop relationships with a diverse range of people.
- Good communication and team working skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities
- Someone who is very committed to social impact, with the drive to grow with an ambitious agency and imbed the company’s values in your day to day work
Due to the nature of the project, we are keen for the team on this project to be reflective of the communities we are working with, as such we are particularly interested in applications from members of the community in either Lambeth or Southwark.
Terms and benefits
Terms: The role will be full time (37.5 hours/week) fixed term for 1 year with the possibility to extend. As we often work with volunteers occasional evening and weekend work will be required and compensated through TOIL.
Salary: £28,000 p/a
Location: Primarily home based with the occasional requirement to attend to our office in King’s Cross for training or team building. You are also able to work from the office more regularly if you prefer (depending on current government guidelines and advice). As a large part of this role involves working directly with community groups in South London we will expect you to be able to travel to different locations in Lambeth and Southwark regularly.
Language skills & visa status: Candidates must be fluent in English. You must have the right to work in the UK independently, as we unfortunately are unable to provide visa sponsorship.
Holiday: 25 days plus bank holidays.
